Euroleague Preview – Round 18 – The underdogs have a chance!

Round 18 of the Regular Season provides a series of must-win match-ups in the race for the playoffs, including a legendary coach facing his former team and a big battle between the two teams currently placed third and fourth in the standings.
Thursday’s matches
The action starts in Russia, where CSKA Moscow (13-4) will attempt to maintain its return to form against Brose Bamberg (7-10). Last week saw first-placed and top-scoring CSKA reach treble figures for the third time this season, while Bamberg was held to a season-low 58 points in defeat. It could be a shoot-out, because these are the two most efficient offensive teams in the competition, with CSKA’s league-best true shooting percentage of 53% closely followed by Bamberg’s 51%. This could prove a hard encounter for the hosts and we back the away win with a handicap of +13.5 points at 1.90 on bet365.
In Istanbul, Fenerbahce (10-7) coach Zeljko Obradovic will welcome former team Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens (10-7) to break their tie for fifth place. Panathinaikos would like a low-scoring game – the Greek team has the league’s third-best defense, allowing just 74.3 points per game, while Fenerbahce is the third-lowest scorer with an average of 75.8 points. But Panathinaikos could struggle if it doesn’t shed its status as the competition’s worst free-throw shooting team (71.7%). We back the away win with a handicap of +6.5 points at 1.90.
Crvena Zvezda MTS Belgrade (9-8) will attempt to maintain its outstanding form by claiming its fifth consecutive victory with a trip to Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv (6-11). Zvezda won by 25 when the teams met a month ago, but Maccabi has become much more competitive since then, with four of its last five games being decided by no more than five points. Maccabi has the league’s third-best true shooting percentage (50.2%) and will need that efficiency against a Zvezda team which allows the second fewest number of points per game (73.6). Allow us a No Bet here.
The league’s basement dwellers go head to head as EA7 Emporio Armani Milan (4-13) aim to snap a 10-game losing streak against Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul (5-12). Not surprisingly, these two teams have conceded more points than anyone else, with Milan allowing 87.8 points per game and Galatasaray 85.3. Both have some cause for optimism: Galatasaray is ranked first in blocked shots (3.82 per game), while Milan is third in two-pointers made (22.2 per game). Another No Bet for the bottom two teams that really hope for nothing.
Finally on Thursday, two teams aiming to bounce back from close losses meet as FC Barcelona Lassa (7-10) welcomes Anadolu Efes Istanbul (8-9). Barcelona are by far the competition’s lowest scorers, averaging 71.4 points per game and only 66 in its last two losses. Efes, in contrast, boasts the third-strongest offense in the league with 82.8 points per game, and the third-worst defense after allowing an average of 84.1 points. Bet365 offers the away win with a handicap of +6.5 points at 1.90.
Friday’s matches
On Friday, Unics Kazan (7-10) will look for its fifth win in six games with a trip to Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul (9-8). The Turkish team has conceded at least 81 points in each of its last four games, partly explaining why it has the league’s third-worst overall performance index rating (82.76 per game). Unics’s preference for the paint is illustrated by the Russian team scoring fewer three-pointers than any other team (7.1 per game), but netting the fourth-highest number of two-pointers (21.5 per game). The away win with a handicap of +7.5 points is offered by bet365 at 1.90 .
In the Game of the Week, second-placed Real Madrid (12-5) travels to face a Zalgiris Kaunas team (6-11) which has lost three straight at home. Madrid’s high-performing offense ranks first in the league in performance index rating (102.1 per game), assists (20.2 per game) and assist-to-turnover ratio (174.1%). Zalgiris, meanwhile, has been the competition’s most effective team from the foul line, converting 81.9% of its free throws. This could be a high scoring gane and the selection of Over 165.5 points is priced at 1.90 with bet365.
And finally, third-placed Olympiacos Piraeus (12-5) hosts fourth-placed Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz (11-6). It’s a battle of the league’s best rebounders, with Baskonia’s total haul of 37.2 boards per game marginally better than Olympiacos’s total of 37.1. The Greek host has seen its defense reach peak performance in recent weeks, allowing an average of just 66 points in the last three games, all of which resulted in victory. But Olympiacos also has the league’s worst assist-to-turnover ratio (113.24%). The away win with a handicap of +6.5 points looks good and is priced at 1.90.

Fenerbahce – Efes
Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul (15-10) is on a 10-game winning streak and arrives to the Turkish derby in top form, led by Nando De Colo (14.4 ppg., 4.1 apg.), Jan Vesely (13.0 ppg., 5.3 rpg.) and Marko Guduric (12.2 ppg., 3.5 apg.). Anadolu Efes Istanbul (14-10) has also been really solid lately, winning six of its last seven EuroLeague showdowns. Vasilije Micic (15.2 ppg.) has been its top scorer until now, followed by Shane Larkin (15.1 ppg.) and Krunoslav Simon (10.9 ppg.).
Fenerbahce is 10-0 since Guduric joined the team, as he balanced his team’s offense with his excellent spacing, three-point shots and passing skills. On defense, Fenerbahce should play physical against Micic and Larkin, and will rely on Brown and Edgaras Ulanovas to do so. Finding Vesely and Kyle O’Quinn down low is also one of the biggest keys to this game, as it would give De Colo, Jarrel Eddie and Guduric more chances to play one-on-one and find good shots from outside the arc.
Stopping Vesely down low should be a priority for Efes, which counts on Bryant Dunston, Sertac Sanli and Tibor Pleiss to play strong, physical defense against him. Efes excelled on defense against Olympiacos Piraeus last week, allowing just 25 points in the final 29 minutes of their Round 25 game. That defensive approach could well be needed against a talented team like Fenerbahce. As always, Efes should run its offense through Micic and Larkin, two great, unselfish scorers who also can find their teammates in double-team situations.
Tip: 2 at 2.10 with bet365
(Price correct at 25/02/2021, 12:00 CET, subject to change)
Baskonia – Crvena Zvezda
Two teams with much different momentum meet on Friday night when TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz hosts Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade. Baskonia has won three straight games to climb to 12-13 and is within striking distance of the playoff zone. Zvezda, which has lost five in a row to fall to 7-18, has dropped six of its last seven road games.
Baskonia leads the league with 8.0 steals per game, but some of those gains are offsets by its 14.6 turnovers, which are third-most. If Baskonia can remain aggressive defensively and in transition while cutting down on turnovers, it will be in a promising position to extend its winning streak.
Zvezda must play better in the paint to have a chance in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The team has been outrebounded by more than a rebounds per game on average, while Baskonia has outrebounded its opponents by 3.2 per game. Moreover, Zvezda is the only team shooting below 50% on two-pointers this season and Baskonia has limited teams to just 51.8%. This task will fall on the shoulders of Ognjen Kuzmic, Landry Nnoko and Marko Jagodic-Kuridza, among others.
- Cory Walden, Langston Hall, Landry Nnoko, Duop Reath and Quino Colom all missed the last two games because of COVID-19.
Tip: Over 154.5 at 1.90 with bet365
(Price correct at 25/02/2021, 12:00 CET, subject to change)
ALBA Berlin – Panathinaikos
ALBA Berlin (8-17) is on a four-game losing streak and has won just twice in its last 12 EuroLeague games. Luke Sikma (9.0 ppg., 5.7 rpg., 4.0 apg.), Ben Lammers (10.2 ppg., 4.1 rpg.) and Marcus Eriksson (10.7 ppg.) are its main pillars right now. Panathinaikos OPAP Athens (9-14) has won its last two games and wants to keep it going. The Greens are led by Nemanja Nedovic (16.7 ppg.m 3.8 apg.), Ioannis Papapetrou (12.4 ppg., 4.7 rpg.) and Georgios Papagiannis (9.6 ppg., 6.2 rpg.) and on Monday signed swingman Mario Hezonja to add even more punch.
ALBA did a lot of good things against Fenerbahce last week, sharing the ball with efficiency – 25 assists, 13 turnovers – and shooting with solid percentages (61.8% 2FG, 36.7% 3FG, 100% FT). Running its offense through Sikma, a forward with outstanding passing skills, should allow ALBA to get better options all around on offense. Lammers and Johannes Thiemann have the tough mission to stop Dinos Mitoglou and Papagiannis down low. If ALBA boxes out on defense and gets its transition game going, it should have a better chance to win.
- Niels Giffey has been sidelined since Round 17 with an injury.
- Jayson Granger is out after having hand surgery.
- Luis Olinde is expected to miss several weeks after injuring his hand ahead of Round 25.
Panathinaikos has a size advantage in critical spots, such as center – with Papagiannis – and small forward – with Papapetrou – and should make the most out of it. Panathinaikos ranks second in offensive rebounds (11.9 orpg.) and should keep looking to power the glass for second-chance opportunities. It is important for the Greens to prevent ALBA from running, so transition defense and putting pressure on Siva and Maodo Lo should one of the biggest keys to this game.
- New signing Mario Hezonja’s first appearance will have to wait until thw next round.
Tip: Under 163.5 at 1.90 with bet365
(Price correct at 25/02/2021, 12:00 CET, subject to change)
Barcelona – Villeurbanne
FC Barcelona (17-8) leads the standings and has won seven of its last eight games. Nikola Mirotic (16.0 ppg.) has been its top scorer until now, followed by Cory Higgins (12.9 ppg.) and Brandon Davies (11.8 ppg.). LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne (11-14) is on a five-game winning streak, a record for French teams in the EuroLeague. Moustapha Fall (9.3 ppg., 70.0% 2FG, 5.5 rpg.), Norris Cole (13.4 ppg., 3.5 apg.) and David Lighty (11.7 ppg.) have been its main pillars throughout the season.
Barcelona comes off a really convincing win against Zalgiris Kaunas, forcing its opponents into low shooting percentages (48.6% 2FG, 26.3% 3FG) and forcing 20 turnovers. That kind of hustle should be needed against a physical team like ASVEL. Zalgiris averages 9.0 offensive rebounds, but grabbed 15 against Barcelona, so there is room for improvement. On offense, Higgins and Mirotic should stay as Barcelona’s go-to guys. On defense, Calathes faces a key matchup against Cole.
- Leo Westermann missed Round 25 game with an ankle injury.
Since it started to shoot the ball better, ASVEL has become unstoppable. Before its current winning streak, ASVEL had hit 38.8% of its three-point shots (171-of-441). Since then, it has improved to 45 of 97, or 46.4%. Sharpshooter Antoine Diot, Lighty and Matthew Strazel must keep finding good shots, creating space for Guerschon Yabusele and Moustapha Fall to play one-on-one in the paint. Preventing Calathes from dominating the game tempo should be another big key to this game.
- Derrick Walton has been sidelined for several weeks with a hip injury.

Zenit – Valencia
Two teams coming off big wins meet the Round 26 opener when Zenit St Petersburg hosts Valencia Basket. Zenit (15-9) defeated AX Armani Exchange Milan in a makeup game on Monday to soar into fourth place in the standings. Valencia (13-12) has defeated CSKA Moscow and Real Madrid in its last two games and is just one win behind eighth-placed Anadolu Efes Istanbul.
Zenit boats the league’s second-best defense, with only 74.8 points allowed per game, while Valencia is second-best in scoring (82.2 ppg.) and leads the league in two-point accuracy (58.9%). Controlling the pace and the paint will be vital for Zenit, which held the high-scoring Milan attack to 70 points on Monday. Valencia has averaged just 75.5 points in its 12 losses this season.
- Joan Sastre and Guillem Vives both missed Valencia’s last game to injury.
Controlling the glass is always critical and even more so on the road. Valencia has been outrebounded by nearly 1 rebound on average this season and is one of only five teams allowing its opponents more than 10 offensive rebounds per game (10.3). Matching Zenit’s intensity on the glass would be a big boost for the visitors in St Petersburg.
Tip: Over 156.5 at 1.90 with bet365
(Price correct at 25/02/2021, 12:00 CET, subject to change)
Olympiacos – CSKA Moscow
Two teams looking to turn things around meet on Thursday when Olympiacos Piraeus hosts CSKA Moscow. The Reds (11-14) are currently on a five-game losing streak. Kostas Sloukas (12.0 ppg.) has been Olympiacos’s top scorer until now, following by Shaquielle McKissic (10.7 ppg.) and Sasha Vezenkov (9.1 ppg.). CSKA (16-8) has lost four of its last five games, but returns to action with two new faces, Iffe Lundberg and Michael Eric, ready to help Mike James (20.8 ppg.), Will Clyburn (14.1 ppg.) and Darrun Hilliard (10.4 ppg.).
- Kostas Papanikolaou has missed Olympiacos’s last 10 games.
- Hassan Martin is sidelined with a knew injury.
Olympiacos scored 26 points in the opening 11 minutes of last week’s game against Anadolu Efes Istanbul. It went on to score just 27 points in the remaining 29 minutes, so the Reds need to work on their focus and concentration. Stopping James should be one of the keys to the game and Olympiacos will look to Charles Jenkins and Giannoulis Larentzakis to do so. On offense, Sloukas and Vassilis Spanoulis lead Olympiacos’s pick-and-roll offense, which will try to get Octavius Ellis and Livio Jean-Charles involved in the paint.
- Will Clyburn has not played since Round 16 due to an ankle injury, but has returned to action in domestic competition since then.
- Nikola Milutinov could miss the rest of the season with a shoulder surgery.
- Tornike Shengelia has not played in Round 24 and is expected to miss several games with a knee injury.
CSKA returns to the competition after three weeks away from EuroLeague action. It had time to adjust to its new lineup – Nikola Milutinov is out for the season, Clyburn returned, and two new players stepped in. CSKA, however, should carry on running its offense through James, the EuroLeague’s top scorer. If Toko Shengelia remains sidelined, Johannes Voigtmann and Eric should see extended playing time around the baskets and Coach Dimitris Itoudis could opt for a smaller lineup with Clyburn at power forward.
Tip: 2 (-4.5) at 1.90 with bet365
(Price correct at 25/02/2021, 12:00 CET, subject to change)
Bayern – Maccabi
In a showdown between teams looking to bounce back from Round 25 losses, FC Bayern Munich hosts Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv on Thursday. Bayern (15-10) had a three-game losing streak snapped when it fell at LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne. Coach Trinchieri’s men are 9-3 at home this season. Maccabi (10-13) has dropped its last two games and is 4-8 on the road this season. The Israeli champs are now four wins outside of the playoff zone and the pressure may be mounting.
- Nihad Dedovic missed the team’s Round 25.
- Robin Amaize has missed the last eight games.
- Zan Mark Sisko returned to action in Round 25 after missing seven games.
Bayern excels by playing a physical game that leads to lots of steals and forced turnovers. It leads the league in fouls (23.2 per game), is second in steals (7.8 apg.) and fourth in turnovers forced (14.1 TOpg.). Maccabi’s poor free-throw shooting (76.7%, 16th in the league) is something Bayern can take advantage as is Maccabi’s struggles from the three-point line (35.6%). Forcing Maccabi into tough shots and fouling when the Israeli champs have good looks could be a recipe for success.
- T.J. Cline is due to make his EuroLeague debut.
- Yovel Zoosman will be out until late March with a knee injury.
- Omri Casspi will travel to Munich with the team and may play after missing several weeks with illness.
- The participation of Wilbekin (thumb), Othello Hunter and Casspi will be game-time decisions.
Bayern has made the most two-pointers (21.5 per game) and the fewest threes (7.2 per game) in the league this season. Maccabi has a deep and long frontline with Othello Hunter, Ante Zizic, Dragan Bender and Angelo Caloiaro and they together will be tasked with controlling the paint on both ends. A collective strong game by the Maccabi bigs blocking shots, on the glass and scoring inside would put Coach Sfairopoulos’s men in a winning position.
Tip: 2 at 2.25 with bet365
(Price correct at 25/02/2021, 12:00 CET, subject to change)
Milano – Khimki
AX Armani Exchange Milan will try to bounce back from losing two of its last three games when it hosts Khimki Moscow Region on Thursday. Third-placed Milan (16-9) has won five straight home games and is 9-4 on Italian soil this season. Khimki (2-22) is on a 16-game losing streak, though Alexey Shved and co. continue to play hard.
- Jeff Brooks has not played in the last six games.
- Zach LeDay has missed the last two games with an injury.
Milan’s high-powered attack is second in the league in three-point accuracy (42.0) and has committed the fewest turnovers (10.8 TOpg.). Khimki has been vulnerable to the three-pointer, allowing a league-high 43.2%. Milan should get plenty of good looks, but it needs Malcolm Delaney, Luigi Datome, Punter, Shavon Shields and Sergio Rodriguez to make their threes, because when the threes don’t fall, Milan struggles. Coach Messina’s men have made just 34.3% of their triples in defeats this season.
- Devin Booker has missed the last four games.
- Anton Ponkrashov made his Khimki return in Round 25.
- Errick McCollum did not play in Round 25.
Khimki can ill-afford turnovers in Milan; the team has averaged just 10 turnovers per game in wins and 14.4 in losses. Khimki also needs to make more use of its interior weapons, such as Jordan Mickey, to balance the attack, since it is tied for second-to-last with just 17.5 two-point shots made per game.
Tip: 1 (-19.5) at 1.90 with bet365
(Price correct at 25/02/2021, 12:00 CET, subject to change)
Real Madrid – Zalgiris
Real Madrid hosts Zalgiris Kaunas on Thursday in a showdown between two playoff hopefuls separated by just one game in the standings. Real is fifth at 15-10, while Zalgiris is four places behind despite its 14-11 record. Los Blancos will try to shake off back-to-back losses and recapture its winning form before heading to Russia for two games next week. After winning seven in a row at home, Real has dropped three of its last four in Madrid. Zalgiris snapped a two-game slide on Tuesday with a victory over Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade and now wants to turn that into a winning streak. The Lithuanian champs are 7-6 on the road this season with losses in four of their last five.
- Anthony Randolph is out with a ruptured left Achilles tendon.
- Rudy Fernandez did not play in Round 25 due to back issues.
- Sergio Llull’s participation in the games is questionable with a knee injury.
After losing its last two games in a row, Real will look to geth back to the winning track as soon as possible if it wants to stay among the top teams. In front of them they will have a team with fighting spirit which also happens to be the second-best team in the league from beyond the arc. The hosts will have to pay attention in defense to those open shots, while also make sure that the guests do not travel too often to the free-throw line, where they lead the league with a 85.2%
- Zalgiris swingman Patricio Garino remains out of action after a knee operation.
- Arturas Milaknis is out after making 200 consecutive appearances in the competition. This was the second-longest streak this century.
If any team has the tools to neutralize Walter Tavares’s defensive impact, it’s Zalgiris, which is second in the league in three-point shooting at 42.0%. However, Zalgiris is very selective from downtown; its 19.9 threes attempted per game are the third-fewest in the league and it will be without ace shooter Arturas Milaknis this week. If Maruis Grigonis, Lukas Lekavicius and Nigel Hayes heat up and stretch the floor, it would be a great sign for the visitors. Zalgiris has averaged 9.5 three-pointers on 47.2% shooting in wins this season and just 6.9 threes at 35.2% in defeats.
