Fenerbahce – Zenit

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul (13-10 ) is on an eight-game winning streak and wants to keep that outstanding momentum going, led by Jan Vesely (12.9 ppg., 5.3 rpg.), Nando De Colo (13.2 ppg.) and Lorenzo Brown (10.7 ppg.). Zenit St Petersburg (13-8) comes off back-to-back losses for the first time this season and looks to avoid a third one. Kevin Pangos (11.8 ppg., 6.2 apg.), Arturas Gudaitis (10.7 ppg.) and Will Thomas (8.3 ppg., 5.1 rpg.) have been its pillars this season.

  • Guduric suffered an apparent leg injury in domestic action on Sunday.
  • Danilo Barthel has not played since Round 18.

Fenerbahce has averaged 78.0 points this season and raised that number to 93.6 in the last five games. Vesely has been unstoppable in the paint, but Fenerbahce has dramatically improved its three-point shooting, making 58 of 122 shots from downtown (47.5%) in those five games. Before that, Fenerbahce had converted 37.7% of its shots from beyond the arc. DyShawn Pierre and Marko Guduric are listed as gametime decisions and if they don’t play, Melih Mahmutoglu and Jarell Eddie will be called to step up and help Nando De Colo with their team’s scoring duties.

  • Alex Poythress has been unavailable for Zenit’s last six games.

It all starts with defense when it comes to Zenit. The Russian powerhouse has allowed just 74.2 points and opponents have made just 35.4% of their three-point shots. That should be critical against a team with very good shooters all around its backcourt. Stopping Vesely, however, should be one of the biggest keys to this game, and Zenit will rely on Gudaitis and Anton Pushkov to do so. On offense, Pangos and Mateusz Ponitka should be ready to control the game tempo, making sure they find good shots for KC Rivers, Austin Hollins and Billy Baron.

Olympiacos – Panathinaikos

Olympiacos Piraeus (11-2) comes into the second Athens Derby of the season on a three-game losing streak. Kostas Sloukas (12.3 ppg.) has been the Reds’ top scorer until now, followed by Shaquielle McKissic (10.5 ppg.) and Hassan Martin (9.1 ppg.). Panathinaikos OPAP Athens (8-14) comes off a solid win against Valencia Basket and wants more, led by Nemanja Nedovic (16.7 ppg.), Ioannis Papapetrou (12.8 ppg.) and Georgios Papagiannis (9.7 ppg., 6.3 rpg.).

  • Kostas Papanikolaou has missed Olympiacos’s last eight games.
  • Sasha Vezenkov did not play in Round 23.

Both teams know each other well, but Olympiacos has a lot of players – Vassilis Spanoulis, Sloukas, Printezis, Sasha Vezenkov – with valuable experience in these types of games and situations. Panathinaikos ranks second in offensive rebounds (11.7 orpg.) so boxing out should be one of the biggest keys to this game. That would allow the Reds to get good options in transition, led by Sloukas and McKissic. On defense, stopping Papagiannis down low could be critical and Olympiacos relies on Martin and Ellis to do so.

  • Nemanjia Nedovic is injured for Panathinaikos.

Panathinaikos ranks last overall in three-point shooting percentage, making 34.5% of its shots from downtown. The Greens have averaged more than 25 three-point shots taken per game, so converting them is a must in such an important game. Dinos Mitoglou and Papagiannis give Panathinaikos a size advantage in the paint and the Greens should make the most out of it. On defense, preventing Sloukas and Spanoulis from finding easy points for themselves and teammates through pick-and-roll situations is important, too.

Bayern Munich – ALBA Berlin

FC Bayern Munich (14-9) comes off consecutive road wins and looks to keep that momentum going at Audi Dome, led by Wade Baldwin IV (14.0 ppg.), Jalen Reynolds (14.1 ppg., 6.6 rpg.) and D.J. Seeley (9.5 ppg.). ALBA Berlin (8-15) arrives to the German Derby after winning once in the last six EuroLeague games. Peyton Siva (10.1 ppg., 4.6 apg.), Luke Sikma (9.5 ppg., 5.5 rpg.) and Jayson Granger (8.7 ppg., 5.0 apg.) have been ALBA’s leaders this season.

  • Robin Amaize, Nihad Dedovic and Zan Mark Sisko have missed the last six games.
  • Vladimir Lucic missed Bayern’s Round 22 and 23 games.

Bayern has allowed 76.9 points on average and limited opponents to making just 33.7% of their three-point shots. Reaching out to ALBA’s many shooters – Siva, Granger, Eriksson, Simone Fontecchio – should be the biggest key to the game. Offensive rebounds are also really important to prevent ALBA from running the floor. Bayern pulled down 15 offensive boards against Khimki Moscow Region, but just 6 against CSKA. Looking for second-chance opportunities through Reynolds, Leon Radosevic and James Gist should be critical for the Bavarian powerhouse.

  • Niels Giffey is expected to miss several weeks with an injury.

ALBA is allowing opponents to make 56.8% of their two-point shots, so it needs to protect its paint much better, especially against a team with effective frontcourt scorers like Gist, Reynolds and JaJuan Johnson. It should get its many talented guards involved, as Siva, Granger and Maodo Lo can speed up the game tempo and look for easier points in transition. ALBA ranks last in defensive rebounds (20.6 drpg.), so the biggest key to a more efficient performance could start by boxing out better.

Villeurbanne – AX Milano

A winning streak will come to a close on Friday when LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne hosts AX Armani Exchange Milan. ASVEL has won three in a row and six of its last nine games. Milan has reeled off six straight victories and is 7-3 on the road this season, with wins in its last four road games.

The two teams are among the best three-point shooting teams in the league with Milan second (42.7%) and ASVEL fourth (39.5%). However, while Milan has made the fourth most threes (9.7 per game), ASVEL has made just the 14th most (8.7). A big three-point shooting night for either team – or subsequently a poor one for one team – could prove decisive.

  • Jeff Brooks has not played in the last three rounds.
  • Sergio Rodriguez is out.

Milan has committed the fewest turnovers in the league this season (11.2 per game), while ASVEL has committed the third-most (14.7). ASVEL is also fourth in the league in steals (7.1 spg.) and will put pressure on the Milan guards. Winning the turnover battle could make all the difference in this showdown.

Real Madrid – Baskonia

Real Madrid (15-8) has won its last two EuroLeague games and looks for another against a very familiar opponent. Walter Tavares (11.8 ppg., 7.8 rpg., 1.9 bpg.), Trey Thompkins (10.6 ppg., 4.4 rpg.) and Sergio Llull (9.2 ppg.) have led the team this season. TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz (10-13) is on a four-game road losing streak. Pierria Henry (11.2 ppg., 7.1 apg., 2.0 spg.), Achille Polonara (11.1 ppg., 6.3 rpg.) and Alec Peters (12.1 ppg., 4.0 rpg.) have been its pillars this season.

  • Anthony Randolph is out with a ruptured left Achilles tendon.

Llull and Carlos Alocen have stepped up in the last two games, sharing the point guard duties with great effectiveness. Baskonia is a physical team and Real should match its character and aggressiveness to have a better chance to win the game. Usman Garuba and Tavares should lead Real’s defense with their athleticism and energy, getting stops that allow their teammates to play in transition. On offense, Gabriel Deck is in good form and getting him involved in one-on-one plays should be important, too.

Stopping Tavares should be a priority and Baskonia has the size and bench depth required to so with Tonye Jekiri, Youssoupha Fall and Ilimane Diop, who had 4 blocks off the bench against Zalgiris Kaunas last week. Baskonia relies on Henry to control the game tempo and he will try to cause Llull and Alocen trouble with his on-the-ball defense and intensity. Baskonia had 20 assists and just 11 turnovers against Zalgiris Kaunas and must try to keep those numbers at WiZink Center by getting Peters and Rokas Giedraitis involved on offense.
