Bayern – Panathinaikos

One of two teams will start a winning streak on Friday night when FC Bayern Munich (4-5) welcomes Panathinaikos OPAP Athens (5-4) for Round 10. Earlier this week, Bayern managed to defeat Olympiacos Piraeus in comeback fashion and snapped a three-game losing streak. Panathinaikos has won three of its last four games, but the last one, a thriller at Zalgiris Kaunas, helped the Greens return to their winning ways after having lost their previous matchup to ALBA Berlin.

Bayern goes into the game with a nearly 10-point disadvantage in average scoring against Panathinaikos’s second-best offense in the league. Nonetheless, Bayern excels at three-point shooting with the league’s second-best accuracy rate (41.1%) and should try to exploit that again at home. The Greens are better, on paper, on all other fronts, so defense will be key for Bayern to try to stop the guests from stealing their first win from Munich.

Panathinaikos is going through a coaching change, but the win in Kaunas softened the blow. The Greens showed that they can keep their cool to decide close games even on the road. Now, they’ll want to prove in Munich that they are the better team based not only on numbers, but on moxie. Keys will be limiting Greg Monroe’s effect for Bayern and Calathes executing the ball circulation that he specializes in. If the Greens impose their style in Munich, they will have options to take the win home to Athens.

ASVEL Villeurbanne – Fenerbahce

Two teams coming from Round 9 losses will face off when LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne (5-4) hosts Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul (2-7) on Friday. ASVEL lost its first home game of the season against Anadolu Efes Istanbul and now hosts another Turkish team that will arrive wounded and ready to bounce back. Fenerbahce suffered a severe defeat in Barcelona and confirmed its slow start to the EuroLeague season. One of them will get back to the winning path on Friday.

ASVEL is having a dream start to the season at home, and it was just two days ago that the team dropped its first game in Lyon. Now, it’s faces the visit of another EuroLeague behemoth like Fenerbahce. The guests arrive wounded, which makes them even more dangerous. Fenerbahce has the second-worst offense in the league, but the only team worse is ASVEL itself. The hosts will have to look for big man Tonye Jekiri, who is dominating in the paint, and try to make good selections when shooting from beyond the arc. Rebounds could be a key factor for ASVEL since Fenerbahce seems to be struggling with that aspect, aside from the fact that the guests will arrive without their best scorer Nando De Colo, who is still injured.

Fenerbahce is in a rare situation for a team that has been to five consecutive Final Fours. However, the heart of this team can never be underestimated, and its roster is loaded with individual talent. The guests will have to try to forget the bad results and focus on beginning a recovery, and Lyon could be a great place to start. ASVEL is featuring better numbers on defense, so Fener will have to try to move the ball well and increase those 15.8 assists per game it has at this point. The hosts seem to be having a hard time from beyond the arc, so forcing those situations could be a way out for Fenerbahce, which needs a win as soon as possible.

Barcelona – Maccabi

Two teams with great starts to the season will square off on Friday when FC Barcelona (7-2) welcomes Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv (6-3) for Round 10. Barcelona comes off an overwhelming win at home against Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul and will look to keep its momentum going against one of its direct rivals for the top spots in the standings. Maccabi lost in Milan for Round 9, which ended its six-game winning streak, so the Israelis will try to get back on the winning track as soon as possible, despite missing Omri Casspi with injury.

Coach Svetislav Pesic said that Barca’s game against Fener had been “perfect”, and that’s what the hosts will have to repeat if they want to defeat Maccabi, too. Maccabi has the best offense in the league and is also the top rebounding team, although followed closely by the hosts. Overall, Maccabi is doing everything well so far this season, so Barcelona will have to try to capitalize on the fact that the guests suffered a rare defeat and need to regroup. If the trio formed by Higgins, Nikola Mirotic and Kyle Kuric works in offense, as usual, and the team plays the tight defense that Pesic likes, they will be on their way to protect the Palau.

After six straight wins, the loss in Milan can be painful for Maccabi, but then again, it could be expected as Milan is firing on all cylinders. The same could be said about Barcelona, as Maccabi will have faced two of the co-leaders of the league in three days. Both teams boast some of the best defenses in the league, so Maccabi’s edge could be found in its accuracy in offense. Without Casspi, the team’s second-best scorer, Maccabi could suffer a bit, but the rest of a solid and deep roster will have to step up to fill his shoes and try to become the first team to win in Barcelona this season.

Baskonia – Zenit

It is a never-seen-before showdown in European club competitions. KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz (4-5) has struggled but comes off a big home win against CSKA Moscow, so this is an opportunity to gain momentum. Zenit (2-7) comes off a heartbreaking road loss against Valencia Basket, its second in a row by 4 or less points. Zenit has a four-game losing streak, making this game a good opportunity to get back on track.

Baskonia pulled down 32 defensive rebounds against CSKA on Wednesday, and that effort will be needed against Zenit, the EuroLeague’s offensive rebounds leader this season. Baskonia did not take good care of the ball against CSKA, however, getting 11 assists and 18 turnovers, and struggled from beyond the arc (29.2%, 7 for 24). There is room for improvement; better ball circulation will lead to better shooting percentages and a more effective offense.

Zenit leads the EuroLeague in offensive rebounds, pulling down 12.1 per night. It must keep playing with that aggressiveness to neutralize Baskonia’s trademark character. Zenit has struggled from the three-point line, hitting 33.8% of its shots, but downed 14 against Valencia on Tuesday in what surely is a step forwards. Without Mateusz Ponitka and Evgeny Voronov, Tim Abromaitis, Austin Hollins and Renfroe will need to step up and lead the team’s perimeter.

Real Madrid – CSKA

The last two Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champions, Real Madrid (6-3) and CSKA Moscow (6-3), meet for the first time this season to settle their part of a four-way tie just below three league leaders. Real is undefeated at home and wants to keep its momentum going in front of the fans at WiZink Center. CSKA has already recorded several road wins but this will be its biggest test to date outside of the Russian capital. Expect nothing short of a spectacular game between these two giants.

After its great exhibition against Khimki, scoring 65 first-half points and finishing the game with excellent shooting percentages (57.8% 2FG, 59.1% 3FG, 92.9% FT), Real will aim to keep that momentum going by securing the defensive boards to get into transition and taking good care of the ball. It worked earlier this week — 33 defensive rebounds, 21 assists, 12 turnovers — and the same recipe will be needed against a more experienced team like CSKA.

CSKA was limited to 66 and 70 points, respectively, in its recent road losses against ASVEL and Baskonia. On Wednesday in Vitoria-Gasteiz, CSKA only hit 13-of-39 shots inside the paint and pulled down just 9 offensive rebounds. Being much more effective inside the paint and powering the offensive glass will be critical against Real, a team that depends on its defensive boards to play in transition and run the floor.
