Khimki – Crvena Zvezda

Two teams with opposite momentum collide in the Russian capital when Khimki Moscow Region hosts Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade on Friday evening. The hosts are winless in five games this season, though two of those losses have come by a single basket, including last week’s 87-89 overtime defeat against Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv. Zvezda is in good spirits after an overtime takedown off CSKA Moscow in Round 5, but Coach Sasa Obradovic’s side is still seeking its first road win of the season.

Khimki was almost at full strength in Round 5 with Shved and Greg Monroe making their season debuts. While that led to an excellent three-point shooting night and strong play from the big men, Khimki also committed 19 turnovers and as a team shot just 42.6% on two-pointers. Improvements in both those categories would increase Khimki’s chances of getting in the win column this week.

Khimki’s Jordan Mickey, Janis Timma, Evgeny Voronov, Greg Monroe returned to action in Round 5 after testing positive for COVID-19 and missing three games. Stefan Jovic and Errick McCollum both missed the first five games of the season. Sergey Monia missed the last two games.

Twice this season Zvezda has had only two players score in double figures and only once has it had four players with more than 10 points. The more effective scoring weapons Zvezda has, the more freedom Loyd has and the more dangerous Zvezda’s attack is overall. The emergence of second and third scoring options is critical for Zvezda.

Olympiacos – Efes

Very familiar foes meet for the 41st time this century, matching the record between Turkish Airlines EuroLeague teams, when Olympiacos (3-2) welcomes Efes (1-3) to Piraeus on Friday. The Reds saw their three-game winning streak stopped last week, but will seek to extend their two in a row at home. Efes heads to its third consecutive road game hoping that superstar Shane Larkin will be ready to play for the first time this season.

Given Efes’s weaknesses so far, Olympiacos will want to concentrate on rebounds and assists. Efes ranks dead last on the boards, which offers the Reds opportunities at both ends. At the same time, extra passing on the offensive end could lead to late open looks that also serve the purpose of slowing the faster pace that Efes likes. Sloukas, Charles Jenkins and Vassilis Spanoulis need to protect the ball and their teammates to stay patient until the opportunities arise. On defense, no team allows fewer assists to opponents than Olympiacos, but Efes presents more one-on-one challenges than most teams, and they must be met, too.

Put simply, opponents are finding it too easy to shoot against Efes, which ranks among the lowest three EuroLeague defenses in terms of two- and three-point shooting accuracy and assists average by its opponents. Also, no team commits fewer fouls or puts opponents on the line less than Efes. Against a physical team like Olympiacos, it stands to reason that the visitors will have to toughen up on defense first and let their prolific offense flow from that. If Larkin returns in form, he alone can change the game’s pace, which would favor Efes, but not if Olympiacos can find easy shots consistently.

Shane Larkin missed the first four games of the season due to injury.

Baskonia – Barcelona

Intranational opponents TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz (2-1) and FC Barcelona (4-1) take each other’s temperature again on Friday night. Having lost only one game each so far, one team will solidify its good status while the other will suffer a step back in after this one. Baskonia has played only once in the EuroLeague since October 9, winning against a weakened Khimki Moscow Region, while Barcelona comes off a solid performance to beat archrival Real Madrid.

The hosts have the second-ranked defense, with opponents averaging just 71.0 points per game, and therein lies the road to victory against a talented Barcelona team. Rebounding, stealing and running are part of the recipe for Baskonia to get easy baskets and keep the visitors guessing. Pierria Henry’s league-leading assist-to-turnover ratio (9.5 to 1) is also key to Baskonia getting an opportunity out of every offense. His defense on the ball is just as important to slow down Nick Calathes before the Barca offense can get into a rhythm.

Alec Peters missed his team’s Round 4 game due to an ankle injury he suffered during warm-ups.

The visitors are hoping to get back team leader Nikola Mirotic for this game, but they also won three games without him with players like Rolands Smits and Sergi Martinez stepping up at the same power forward position. All who play will be valuable against a Baskonia team that likes to attack the basket, preferably on the run. In particular, their rebounding, along with that of center Brandon Davies, will be key if Barca is going to dictate tempo on the road, which would go a long way to bringing home a victory.

Nikola Mirotic missed last three games after testing positive for COVID-19.

Milano – ALBA Berlin

Game Suspended

AX Armani Exchange Milan vs. ALBA Berlin, originally scheduled to be played on Thursday, October 30, has been suspended. ALBA requested the suspension of the game due to local legislation imposing quarantine measures on the team, which leaves it without the minimum eight players on the Authorisation List fit to play.

Following the modification of the Special Regulations due to COVID-19, approved by the ECA Shareholders Executive Board, the game can be rescheduled up to three times, if there are available dates. Euroleague Basketball will coordinate with both teams the best options to reschedule the game. Alternative date will be announced on official Euroleague Basketball platforms once confirmed.
