Villareal - Man Utd preview

Villareal

Villarreal’s run to the Europa League final was not a fluke. They remain unbeaten in the competition so far. They recorded 4-1-0 in the group stage and came out on top despite playing 5 matches instead of 6 (they didn’t have to repeat the postponed match against Qarabakh). In the knockout rounds they qualified by defeating Salzburg, Dynamo Kiev, Dynamo Zagreb and Arsenal in successive order, avoiding defeat on all occasions!

Their progress, of course, is largely down to Emery, who knows the Europa League like the palm of his hand and has 3 conquests to his name. Villareal finished outside the top 6 in LaLiga. At the end of the season they were playing for a Europa League spot, but finished 7th and are heading to the Confederations League unless they beat United. The cause was a 2-1 defeat away to Real Madrid, where they went ahead and held the lead until the 87th minute.

There were obvious signs of fatigue, with consecutive demanding games in Spain and Europe, that proved too much for the current roster. However, the “yellow submarine” has another chance, not only to emerge and win the Europa League, but also to earn… promotion to the top flight, destined for the Champions League.

The news from Villarreal follows below.

Man United

They lost touch with Manchester City at an early stage, only temporarily holding on to the top of the table of the Premier League. Consequently, winning the Europa League turned into the main goal of the season for Solskjaer and his side. Throughout their journey to Gdansk they have shown consistency and commitment. They reached the semi-finals coming from the Champions League and in the knockout stages they beat two Spanish and two Italian teams, Sociedad, Milan, Granada and Roma. The highlight was a 6-2 win over the latter at Old Trafford in the first semi-final before losing 3-2 in Rome.

In the Premier League they finished in 2nd place, 12 points behind Manchester City and 5 ahead of Liverpool. In recent times they have been conserving energy and resources, as their position was unlikely to change. They had no win in three games, but ended their domestic campaign with an away win against Wolves (1-2). An alternative 11 was used by Solskjaer.

United news follows below.

Team News

At Villarreal, Unai Emery has some tough calls to make, especially on the goalkeeper position. Jeronimo Ralli has started all but one game during Villarreal’s Europa League campaign. However, the Argentine lacks the necessary flow of games, which could push Emery to opt for Sergio Asenho.

He also needs to choose a partner for Moreno in the attack. Paco Alcacer has scored six goals in the competition so far, but two-time Europa League winner Carlos Bacca might prove to be the go-to man for a final.

Iborra (M) is sidelined. Juan Foyth, who is on loan from Tottenham, is very likely to be involved.
Juan Foyth, on loan from Tottenham, is very likely to be involved.

At Manchester United, where time for Harry Maguire to prove his fitness is running out. The United captain has suffered an ankle injury back in May. “I don’t expect him to be ready,” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted on Sunday and despite he took the England central defender in Poland, he is planning to play with Lindellof and Eric Bailley in the centre of defence.

Additionally, the Norwegian must decide who will start between the posts, although he used Henderson against Wolves on Sunday, which probably suggests that the more experienced and perceived No.1 David de Gea will defend the English goal in Gdansk.

Martial will most likely miss out as well, while Jones is a long-term absentee.

Possible line-ups Villareal – Man Utd

Villarreal (4-4-2): Asenjo (or Rulli); Foyth, Albiol, Torres, Pedraza; Pino, Capoue, Parejo, Trigueros: Moreno, Bacca (or Alcacer)

Man Utd (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Bailly, Lindelof, Shaw; McTominay, Fred; Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Pogba; Cavani

Unics Kazan – Olympiacos

  • The only previous times these two clubs met, Olympiacos swept UNICS in 2016-17.

Two of the hottest teams in the league meet in Friday’s early game when UNICS Kazan takes on Olympiacos Piraeus. UNICS (7-5) has won four straight games, including a 20-point drubbing of Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade on the road last week. John Brown III led the way with 18 points and Isaiah Canaan and Mario Hezonja added 17 points apiece. Now UNICS returns home where it has won five in a row. Olympiacos (8-4) has won back-to-back games by large margins, including a 19-point victory over AX Armani Exchange last week. That was Olympiacos’s first road win after four straight defeats to open the season. In the teams’ only other two games, Olympiacos swept their regular-season series in 2016-17.

basketball prediction  Tip: 1 at 1.90 with bet365

Anadolu Efes – Barcelona

  • Efes and Barcelona are tied at 12-12 in games between them this century, but Efes has won the last four games.

Reigning Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champion Anadolu Efes Istanbul will take on FC Barcelona on Friday in their first clash since the 2021 championship game in Cologne, Germany. Efes (6-6) struggled out of the game this season, but has now won four in a row. Last week it rallied past crosstown rival Fenerbahce behind 25 points and 7 assists from Shane Larkin. Barcelona (10-2) has also won four in a row and shares the top spot in the standings. It comes off a 96-73 rout of Zalgiris Kaunas behind big games off the bench from Rokas Jokubaitis and Pierre Oriola. This game is a homecoming for Barca center Sertac Sanli, who spent the previous three seasons with Efes.

basketball prediction  Tip: Over 156.5 at 1.90 with bet365

Zenit – Crvena Zvezda

  • Zenit holds 2-1 edge in EuroLeague head-to-head games against Zvezda.

Zenit St Petersburg looks to bounce back from a Round 12 loss that snapped a five-game losing streak when it hosts Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade on Friday. Zenit (8-4) fell 70-64 at Panathinaikos OPAP Athens last week despite 15 points from Jordan Loyd. The Zenit guard will face his former team for the first time since Loyd ranked third in the league in scoring last season with Zvezda (4-8). The Serbian champs have lost three straight games, including a 78-98 shellacking last week at the hands of another Russian club, UNICS Kazan. It allowed a season-high 98 points in that game. Former Zenit player Austin Hollins led Zvezda in scoring in that game with 15 points. Zenit is 5-1 at home this season.

basketball prediction  Tip: Zenit Over 76.5 at 1.80 with bet365

ALBA Berlin – Milano

  • Milan is 3-1 in the EuroLeague against ALBA.

ALBA Berlin will try to take advantage of AX Armani Exchange Milan’s slump when the teams meet on Friday in the German capital. ALBA (4-8) bested Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv 91-86 last week behind Marcus Eriksson, who scored 19 points on 5-of-8 three-point shooting. The win snapped a three-game losing streak. Milan (8-4) was alone in first place after Round 9 before losing three straight games. Last week it lost at home for the first time, falling 72-93 against Olympiacos Piraeus despite 26 points from Shavon Shields. Milan has won its only two previous visits to Milan, but is 2-3 on the road this season. ALBA is 2-4 at home.

CSKA Moscow – Panathinaikos

  • CSKA holds a 21-16 advantage in the EuroLeague against Panathinaikos.

These Turkish Airlines EuroLeague superpowers meet again. CSKA Moscow (7-5) and Panathinaikos OPAP Athens (3-9) combine for 14 continental crowns. CSKA has won its last two games after losing four of its previous five. Will Clyburn (16.0 ppg.) is its top scorer, followed by Toko Shengelia (15.1 ppg.) and Johannes Voigtmann (11.4 ppg.). Panathinaikos comes off a win that stopped a five-game losing streak. Daryl Macon Jr. (16.4 ppg.), Georgios Papagiannis (8.8 ppg., 7.9 rpg.) and Ioannis Papapetrou (12.1 ppg.) are its pillars this season. This is a rematch of the 2007 and 2009 EuroLeague championship games.

basketball prediction  Tip: CSKA Under 86.5 at 1.80 with bet365

Fenerbahce – Monaco

  • This is the first official meeting between the two clubs.

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul hosts AS Monaco on Thursday in a game between two teams coming off Round 12 heartbreakers and looking to end losing streaks. Fenerbahce (3-9) has lost four in a row, including an 84-89 decision at Anadolu Efes Istanbul last week after leading by as many as 12 in the fourth quarter. Marial Shayok scored a personal best 18 points in defeat. Monaco (5-7) has lost its last three games. On Friday, it was felled by French league foe LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, 84-85, on a desperation three at the buzzer. Paris Lee scored a career-high 20 points in the losing effort. This game marks the first meeting between the sides.

basketball prediction  Tip: Over 156.5 at 1.86 with bet365

Zalgiris – Baskonia

  • Baskonia has a 14-10 lead in EuroLeague games against Zalgiris.

Last-placed Zalgiris Kaunas will try to move up in the standings when it hosts Bitci Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz on Thursday evening. Zalgiris (2-10) had won back-to-back games – its first victories of the season – in Rounds 9 and 10 before getting spanked by 23 points in Barcelona last week. Tau Webster had his best game since joining Zalgiris with 13 points and 4 assists in the loss. Baskonia (4-8) has lost six of its last seven games, including a 60-88 drubbing at the hands of Real Madrid last week. Simone Fontecchio showed signs of breaking out of a slump with 14 points and 7 rebounds. The game is the only time this season that Baskonia’s two Lithuanian players, Rokas Giedraitis and Tadas Sedekerskis, will get to play in their homeland.

basketball prediction  Tip: 1 (-3.5) at 1.90 with bet365

Bayern – Villeurbanne

  • The home team has won each of the four games between these two teams.

FC Bayern Munich will seek its third straight home win when it hosts feisty LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne on Thursday. Bayern (5-7) came up short 77-74 last week in Moscow despite 28 points from Darrun Hilliard, but has a winning record at home and knows how important turning Audi Dome into a fortress is for its playoff hopes. ASVEL (7-5) edged AS Monaco on a mid-court heave at the buzzer by William Howard in Round 12 to end a three-game losing streak. Coach TJ Parker’s squad is 3-2 on the road this season. This will be the fifth meeting between the sides; the home team has won the previous four by double digits each time.

basketball prediction  Tip: 2 (+7.5) at 1.86 with bet365

Real Madrid – Maccabi

  • Real leads the all-time series 38-24 and holds an 18-11 advantage in games this century.

It is the most repeated showdown in European competition. Real Madrid (10-2) and Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv (7-5) face each other for the 63rd time. Real has a 38-24 record against Maccabi and beat the Israeli champion in the 1980 EuroLeague championship game. Maccabi avenged that loss in the 2014 final. Real is on a five-game winning streak. Walter Tavares (12.6 ppg., 7.1 rpg., 1.7 bpg.), Guerschon Yabusele (12.3 ppg., 4.4 rpg.) and Vincent Poirier (7.6 ppg., 6.4 rpg.) are leading the team this season. Scottie Wilbekin (14.8 ppg.), James Nunnally (13.4 ppg.) and Ante Zizic (12.8 ppg.) are Maccabi’s top scorers.

Crvena Zvezda – Unics Kazan

  • The record between these two clubs is 1-1 from the season 2016-17.

Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade will look to assert its home-court advantage when UNICS Kazan, led by former Zvezda playmaker Lorenzo Brown, comes to the Serbian capital for a Friday night clash. Zvezda (4-7) lost twice on the road in the two-round week, but is 3-1 at home this season. UNICS (6-5) has struggled thus far on the road with just one win in five games. However, Coach Perasovic’s men have won three straight games, including an 85-71 victory over ALBA Berlin on Friday, in which Lorenzo Brown erupted for 21 points and 9 assists to earn MVP of the Round honors. The playmaker made his EuroLeague debut with Zvezda in 2019-20 and this will be his first time back in front of fans since he left.

basketball prediction Tip: 2 at 2.15 with bet365

Monaco – Villeurbanne

  • This is the first-ever official meeting between the two clubs.

The two giants of French basketball meet on Friday when AS Monaco hosts LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne. These clubs have won every French championship since 2017. Both teams are coming off tough weeks and looking to put an end to their respective slides. Monaco (5-6) has lost its last two games, both times by double-digit margins. However, those games were on the road – in Tel Aviv and Istanbul. Monaco is 4-1 at home this season. ASVEL (6-5) has lost three in a row, including two home games last week by double-digit margins. ASVEL is 2-2 on the road so far this season. This will be the teams’ first meeting on the continental stage since the 1975 Korac Cup.

basketball prediction Tip: Over 159.5 at 1.90 with bet365

Milano – Olympiacos

  • Olympiacos leads 14-7 in games between these sides this century.

AX Armani Exchange Milan will put its perfect home record on the line on Friday against Olympiacos Piraeus, which is winless on the road thus far. Milan (8-3) comes off a tough two-round week in which it lost twice in Russia to fall out of a share of first place. However, it will be comfortable back at Mediolanum Forum, where the team is 6-0 this season – including wins over all three of last season’s other Final Four teams. Olympiacos (7-4) split its games last week, faltering late at Anadolu Efes Istanbul before jumping on Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv early to win at home. The Reds are 0-4 on the road so far this season. These teams have split their last eight meetings and the home team has won the last four.

basketball prediction Tip: 2 (+5.0) at 1.90 with bet365

Barcelona – Zalgiris

  • Barcelona has dominated this series, holding a 24-5 lead this century, including 5 straight wins in the last games.

Two teams from opposite ends of the standings meet when FC Barcelona hosts Zalgiris Kaunas on Friday. The game will see Coach Sarunas Jasikevicius and players Brandon Davies, Nigel Hayes-Davis and Rokas Jokubaitis face their former team. Barcelona has won three games in a row and is tied for first place with a 9-2 record. Zalgiris is tied for last at 2-9, but won twice last week, besting Panathinaikos OPAP Athens and Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul at home. That said, the Lithuanian champs are winless on the road in six tries this season – and have lost 12 straight road games dating back to last season. Barcelona is 5-0 at home this season and has won the last meetings with Zalgiris.
