Khimki – Panathinaikos

Khimki and Panathinaikos enter the season with somewhat reversed rolls than what their histories in the competition would suggest. Ambitious Khimki re-loaded by adding prized big men Greg Monroe and Jordan Mickey to an already well-oiled and deep mix of proven EuroLeague veterans. Meanwhile, it’s the start of a new era for six-time champion Panathinaikos, which made big changes since the last summer and enters a new campaign with a brand new team. Experience together as a team will be on Khimki’s side this time, which is different from when the hosts met Panathinaikos in the past.

Khimki has the luxury of bringing back majority of its key contributors from the last season, including as many as 10 players with important roles who had this team in playoff position when the pandemic unfortunately stopped the last season. Khimki will want to regain that momentum by doubling down on that chemistry and using it to tip the new season off on a winning note.

The Greens are going on the road against a team with all kinds of firepower, but Panathinaikos just might have a thing or two to counter. This Panathinaikos team is full of players who play with energy and possess great athleticism, which are some of the key ingredients for playing tough defense. Slowing down Khimki’s high-octane offense would go a long way towards the Greens challenging for a road win in Moscow.

Fenerbahce – Crvena Zvezda

A new era starts for Fenerbahce with a new head coach, Igor Kokoskov, and a new core of players ready to prove their value. Nando De Colo, Jan Vesely and Ali Muhammed have been joined by Danilo Barthel, Johnny Hamilton, Lorenzo Brown, DyShawn Pierre and Jarrel Eddie, among others. Zvezda brought in Langston Hall, Corey Walden, Jordan Loyd and Duop Reath, as well as bringing back Marko Simonovic. It will be Zvezda’s first EuroLeague game since the tragic death of center Michael Ojo, who will be remembered at every game this week with a minute’s silence before tip-off.

Fenerbahce will run its offense through De Colo, still a superstar at the prime of his career. De Colo is deadly from all angles, especially from the free throw line, and has the experience and basketball IQ required to make the difference at this level. Vesely and Hamilton must make the most of their athletic advantage in the paint. Fenerbahce has three elite three-point shooters in Eddie, Muhammed and Melih Mahmutoglou, and great depth at point guard — with Ali, Brown and Kenan Sipahi — to use against Walden, Hall and Branko Lazic.

Zvezda will rely in its new guard duo, Hall and Walden, to impress everyone in their EuroLeague debuts. Hall is a reliable, pass-first playmaker ready to find open looks for good shooters like Simonovic, Loyd and Ognjen Dobric. As always, Dejan Davidovac is a key piece in Zvezda’s offense, a big perimeter player with excellent ballhandling ready to play one-on-one against Eddie, Pierre and Edgaras Ulanovas. If Zvezda slows down the game tempo and keeps control of its five-on-five offense, getting Hall and Loyd involved, it will have more chances to upset Fenerbahce.

basketball prediction Tip: Under 153.5 at 1.90 with bet365

Bayern Munich – AX Milano

Bayern starts its sixth EuroLeague season, and third in a row, having renewed its roster with talents like Nick Weiler-Babb, Wade Baldwin, Jalen Reynolds, Malcolm Thomas and JaJuan Johnson, while keeping core contributors Vladimir Lucic, Nihad Dedovic and young Zan Sisko, among others. Milan returns with an improved lineup full of experienced players like Kyle Hines, Gigi Datome, Malcolm Delaney, Zach LeDay and Kevin Punter, added to a squad that already featured Sergio Rodriguez, Vladimir Micov and Kaleb Tarczewski, among many others. Expect high-profile basketball at the Audi Dome.

Bayern faces a more experienced, deeper team, and so needs its main players to step up right away. The German powerhouse has a very athletic frontline, led by Thomas, Johnson and Reynolds, and must make the most out of it by playing with enough energy to try to win the rebounds battle on their own floor. Lucic and Dedovic are two very good scorers ready to outduel Micov and Punter, respectively. Bayern head coach Andrea Trinchieri knows Italian basketball better than arguably anyone, and that could be Bayern’s x-factor in this game.

Milan is really deep at point guard, with Rodriguez and Delaney guaranteeing high basketball IQ and great court sense for 40 minutes. Both of them will have plenty of options on offense, but having a range of shooters led by Datome, Punter, Michael Roll and Shavon Shields gives Coach Ettore Messina’s team plenty of options on offense. The biggest key to this game, however, will be defense. Hines, Tarczewski and Jeff Brooks face a physical challenge against a very athletic Bayern frontcourt ready to outpower them, so the fight for every rebound is set to be crucial.

basketball prediction Tip: Over 153.5 at 1.90 with bet365

Baskonia – Real Madrid

Two Spanish powerhouses go against each other to get their EuroLeague season started. Baskonia is back with the same head coach, Dusko Ivanovic, a core of players led by Pierria Henry, Luca Vildoza and Achille Polonara, and as always, interesting new additions such as Tonye Jekiri, Rokas Giedraitis and Alec Peters. Real barely changed a roster that has done great in recent years. As such, head coach Pablo Laso will keep working with Facu Campazzo, Jaycee Carroll, Rudy Fernandez, Sergio Llull, Felipe Reyes, Trey Thompkins, Anthony Randolph or Edy Tavares, among others. Alberto Abalde and Carlos Alocen are Real’s new faces.

Everything starts with high intensity and strong defense for Coach Ivanovic and his teams, and this edition of Baskonia is no exception. Henry leads his team’s defense with his on-the-ball defense and will play a critical role guarding Campazzo and Nico Laprovittola. Baskonia must use its size in the paint — with Jekiri, Yousoupha Fall and Ilimane Diop — to play physical against Tavares. Baskonia will rely on a red-hot Vildoza and its best shooters, Peters and Giedraitis, to make the difference in what promises to be a showdown full of energy.

Real has followed the same basketball recipe for the last decade: strong defense ending in rebounds that lead to expert transition basketball, in which its players are almost unbeatable due to their overall talent and the many years working together. When it comes to defensive boards, any Real player is capable of grabbing one and starting the team’s offense right away. Campazzo, Fabien Causeur, Fernandez and Tavares have stood out in the Spanish League until now but on this team, any player can make the difference down the stretch.
