Baskonia – Olympiacos

In a showdown between two teams on the outside of the playoff zone, TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz hosts Olympiacos Piraeus on Wednesday. Baskonia (13-13) has been on a roll recently with four straight wins. Olympiacos (11-15) has slumped with six consecutive defeats. Though the Reds have a winning record on the road this season (7-6), Baskonia is 8-5 on its home court.

It is always tougher to win on the road when getting outrebounded and that’s good for Baskonia, which has been a superior rebounding team this season. To date, Baskonia has outrebounded its opponents by 3.5 per game on average, while Olympiacos has been outrebounded by 1.2. What’s more, Baskonia is third in the league in offensive boards at 10.9 per game. With Hassan Martin sidelined for the Reds, Baskonia will look to Achile Polonara, Tonye Jekiri and Moustapha Fall to control the glass in what could be the key to victory.

Turnovers have been an issue for both teams this season; they each average 14.3 per game, which is tied for fourth-most in the league. Baskonia has made up for its turnovers by leading the league in steals (8.0 spg.) and ranking second in assists (19.9 apg.). Olympiacos will not only need to cut down on its turnovers in this game, but increased defensive pressure on the Baskonia backcourt could also make a big difference.

  • Kostas Papanikolaou has missed Olympiacos’s last 11 games.
  • Hassan Martin is sidelined with a knee injury.

Armani Milano – Fenerbahce

AX Armani Exchange Milan will look to extend its home-court dominance when it hosts Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul on Wednesday. Milan (17-9) has won its last six home games and is 10-4 in the fashion capital this season. Fenerbahce (15-11) saw its 10-game winning streak come to an end last week, but Coach Kokoskov’s squad won three games on the road in that game.

Milan has scored over 80 points in its last four wins while dishing 77 assists and committing just 33 turnovers for a superb ratio of 2.3. It may need that excellent ball circulation against a physical team like Fenerbahce and both point guards, Sergio Rodriguez and Malcolm Delaney, should play a critical role in that. On defense, it is important to stop Vesely down low and Milan can look to on Hines and Jeremy Evans to do so.

  • Jeff Brooks has not played in the last seven games.
  • Zach LeDay has missed the last three games with an injury.

Fenerbahce has slowly but steadily improved its three-point shooting percentage throughout the season and it now ranks fifth overall at 40.1%. Ali Muhammed is back, giving Fenerbahce another weapon on a team full of great three-pointer shooters such as De Colo, Gurudic and Jarell Eddie. On defense, Fenerbahce must try to break up Milan’s fluency on offense and playing hard, on-the-ball defense against Rodriguez and Delaney could be the key to achieving that goal.
