CSKA – Maccabi

Round 2 opens with this clash of titans in the Russian capital. CSKA comes off an opening night road loss at FC Barcelona in which Toko Shengelia made his CSKA debut with 15 points. Maccabi bested ALBA Berlin in Round 1 with Angelo Caloiaro netting 18. The hosts will be shorthanded after three of their players – All-EuroLeague center Nikola Milutinov, Semen Antonov and Janis Strelnieks – sidelines after testing positive for COVID-19.

CSKA can chalk up its loss in Barcelona to poor shooting (45.5% 2FG, 29.6% 3FG, 66.7% FT) and too many turnovers (16), both of which it will seek to improve against Maccabi. What’s more, CSKA had only 4 steals and was not credited with even a single point on the fast break. Sharing the ball, getting open shots and getting out on the break are all things that could help CSKA right the ship when it plays at home for the first time.

CSKA Moscow announced on Saturday that Semen Antonov, Nikola Milutinov and Janis Strelnieks have tested positive results in primary COVID-19 tests. All three have been isolated from the team.

Maccabi was among the league’s toughest defensive teams last season and held ALBA to 12 points in the second quarter and 32 in the second half in its Round 1 victory. Ante Zizic was one of the team’s most-important offseason signings, yet he tallied just 6 points with 5 turnovers in 15 minutes. Without Milutinov for CSKA, Zizic could have an easier time in the paint and an active Zizic alongside the team’s typically stingy defense could be the recipe this week in Moscow.

Eidan Alber, Yonatan Atias and Dori Sahar and are set to make their respective EuroLeague debuts.

Efes – Fenerbahce

The first Istanbul derby of the 2020-21 season will have a different look than in past seasons. While Efes is virtually the same as last season, Fenerbahce has a new head coach and has turned over most of its roster. Some of those new faces led the way in a Round 1 victory over Crvena Zvezda with Lorenzo Brown scored 17 points and Edgaras Ulanovas 13. Efes lost a tough opener to Zenit St. Peterburg despite 17 points and 9 assists from Vasilije Micic.

Efes lost in Round 1 because of poor three-point shooting (7 for 27; 25.9%) and a lack of scoring off the bench. Aside from Rodrigue Beaubois and Adrien Moerman, the rest of the Efes reserves combined for just 8 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist. Efes will have to be deeper than just seven players and must show signs of the elite shooting attack it boasted last season to get back on track.

Shane Larkin missed the season opener due to injury.

Great defense set the tone for Fenerbahce in its Round 1 victory as it forced 18 turnovers and held Zvezda to sub-par shooting numbers. The majority of the team’s production came from its perimeter players, however, with 2019 EuroLeague MVP Jan Vesely and Danilo Barthel, Fenerbahce has the muscle in the frontcourt to make a difference. A big game from one of the bigs should only open more space for the guards and make Fenerbahce even tougher to stop.

Real Madrid – Valencia

These teams know each other very well, which adds more anticipation to this showdown. Real opened the EuroLeague season with a 76-63 road loss at TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz. It was Real’s first loss on opening night since the introduction of the round-robin format. Valencia registered a 65-63 home win against LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne behind 15 points from Derrick Williams. This will be swingman Alberto Abalde’s first game against his former team; he joined Real from Valencia last summer after four seasons wearing orange.

Both teams are deep at point guard. Real relies on Facu Campazzo to dictate the game tempo and make the difference with his basketball IQ and character. Real finished the game against Baskonia with 7 assists, its lowest mark since 2013, so a better ball circulation is expected. Los Blancos must make the most out of its versatile forwards, Gabriel Deck and Anthony Randolph, to generate advantages on offense. As always, Real must rebound well to start running its trademark, often unstoppable transition offense.

Jeffery Taylor, Sergio Llull and Felipe Reyes all missed Round 1.

Other than Dubljevic and Tobey spreading the floor at the center spot, Valencia needs a good defensive effort from Sam Van Rossom and Guillem Vives against Campazzo and Nico Laprovittola. Valencia is more athletic and arguably more experienced than ever at forward, with Nikola Kalinic and Derrick Williams. Valencia hit just 3 of 20 three-point shots on opening night, so players like Klemen Prepelic and Martin Hermannsson must improve their numbers right away.

Joan Sastre will be sidelined for several weeks with a partial tear to the internal lateral ligament of his right knee.
