Khimki – Real Madrid

Two teams coming off losses earlier this week will look to return to the winning path when Khimki Moscow Region (8-11) welcomes Real Madrid (15-4) for Round 20. Khimki fell at home to Valencia, 75-84, for its fourth defeat in a row. On the other side, Real saw its 13-game winning streak snapped at CSKA Moscow, 60-55. Both will look to end this double-round week on a high note.

Khimki has entered a losing dynamic and must get out of it as soon as possible. The hosts still have the third-best offense in the league, and generally shoot better than the guests, but Real is solid as a rock this season, and its loss to CSKA earlier this week can only bring more trouble to the table for Khimki. If the hosts focus on defense, as CSKA did, they could find the way to snap their losing streak.

Real Madrid plays its second game in Moscow this week with the aim to go back to the winning path. The loss at CSKA severed a long winning streak, but that should only be more motivation to stop one of the best offenses in the league. Coming into the game, Real dominates the battle under the boards and averages more PIR overall than Khimki, but the guests will have to pay attention to the hosts’ offense, embodied in sharpshooter Alexey Shved.

Fenerbahce – Barcelona

Two teams in different situations square off on Thursday when Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul (8-11) hosts FC Barcelona (13-6) for Round 20. The hosts are on a three-game winning streak, including their victory earlier this week against ASVEL, 86-64, and have finally recovered their injured players. Barcelona has dropped the last three games, including on Tuesday at Maccabi, 92-85, and will look to get back to the winning track in order not to lose contact with the top of the standings.

Fenerbahce seems to have found its rhythm after a slow start to the season, and it was only a matter of time before the team started adding wins. Now, with the full roster available, expect the hosts to win even more games. This time, there is a formidable foe in front of them, which has lost its recent games and will try to win at all costs. Fenerbahce is still the last team in the league in rebounds and Barcelona does a bit better in offense. However, the fans in Istanbul will surely push their team, which is gaining confidence game after game.

After rolling through the first third of the season, Barcelona is getting a taste of the competitiveness of the EuroLeague. Two teams in the middle of the battle for the playoff spots will square off in Round 20 when Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv (13-6) hosts AX Armani Exchange Milan (10-9) on Thursday. Maccabi started a winning streak earlier this week with a home victory against Barcelona, 92-85, and will look to extend it. Milan comes from a road loss at Efes, 88-68, and will look to turn things around again and get back to the winning path.

Maccabi seems to be finding its place these last games and with the fourth-best offense in the league. The team is at a place right now where it looks unstoppable. The hosts average a PIR of 10 more than Milan, and come out on top on practically every stats category. However, they must not forget that the guests won in Italy and that the sheer talent in the Milan roster must never be underestimated. The guests may have gone down in performance compared to a few weeks ago, but the EuroLeague is long and tough for everyone, and controlling aces like Sergio Rodriguez, Luis Scola and Vlado Micov must be a priority.

Milan lands in Tel Aviv after a loss at Efes, but the team had won three of the previous four games right after a hurtful losing streak. The Italian team faces an opponent on the rise, with a slight advantage in percentages on free throws and three-pointers. The team must look to floor general Sergio Rodriguez to distribute the ball. If El Chacho can do his thing, the rest of his teammates will see their options on offense increase.
