Fenerbahce – Real Madrid

  • Real Madrid is 21-9 in games this century against Fenerbahce.

Fenerbahce has won four straight games, while Coach Sasa Djordjevic’s side have not lost at home since November – a record of six consecutive home triumphs. The team’s success has come from moving the ball and generating excellent shots, particularly inside. Fenerbahce leads the league in both assists (18.7 apg.) and two-point shooting (48.7 percent) (58.4 percent ). During its current 4-0 run, those percentages have improved to 19.8 assists and 60 percent two-point shooting. However, against a Fenerbahce defence anchored by Tavares that has restricted opponents to a league-low 47.8 percent shooting on two-pointers, Fenerbahce will have to be more inventive. The way Fenerbahce’s big guys Booker, Polonara, and Pierre manage the pressure of Real Madrid’s frontline will be crucial in this game.

Real Madrid leads the rankings, and one of the team’s strengths this season has been its ability to control the glass. This season, Laso’s players have outrebounded opposition by an average of 7 boards per game, with Tavares (7.3 rpg. ), Poirier (6.4 rpg. ), and Yabusele (5.0 rpg.) leading the way and forming one of the competition’s strongest rebounding frontlines. Real, on the other hand, has been outrebounded by 1.7 per game in its three losses this season. Controlling the glass might be the difference between Real leaving Turkey with its 10th consecutive victory.

Zalgiris – AX Milano

  • Zalgiris holds a 8-7 record vs Milano since 2000.

Zalgiris has now lost eight consecutive games, including four at home, and will attempt to turn things around against third-placed Milano. This will be their second meeting in less than two weeks; Milan defeated Zalgiris 65-58 at home in Round 23 on the strength of 12 points from guards Hall and Daniels. Despite playing excellent defence – even without centres Nebo and Joffrey Lauvergne – Zalgiris was undone by 40.7 percent two-point shooting and 14 turnovers. Coach Jure Zdovc’s club is lowest in the league in two-point shooting (49.2 percent), but with Lauvergne and Nebo back and playing with Blazevic, the home team should look to do more damage in the paint, which will be critical in defeating Milan.

Milan had won five consecutive games before losing at home to Fenerbahce last Thursday. Coach Messina’s team had made their fewest turnovers in the league this season (11.3 per game), yet they turned the ball over 16 times, were outrebounded by 4, and hit only 42.9 percent of their two-point attempts against Fenerbahce. Milan will be playing their sixth game in 12 days, so their legs may be exhausted. Using the team’s depth and generating more contributions from its role players might be critical to making better decisions with the ball, rebounding better, and shooting more effectively, all of which are necessary to leave Lithuania with a win.
