CSKA Moscow – Anadolu Efes

  • CSKA has a 21-6 record against Efes in games this century.

CSKA Moscow will always attempt to frighten opponents on the offensive glass, headed by Nikola Milutinov and Joel Bolomboy, now that the squad is back at full strength. With 12.4 offensive rebounds per game, Coach Itoudis’ guys lead the league. Anadolu Efes Istanbul is one of the stronger defensive rebounding teams, yet it is outrebounded by 2.2 boards per game on average. If CSKA can dominate the boards, especially on the attacking end, it will not only result in second-chance points but will also prevent Efes from readily breaking out for transition points.

Efes was lethal from downtown in the three seasons preceding the current season, hitting 40.8 percent of its threes. In that span, no team connected from downtown more than Efes’ 1,112 triples. Efes has struggled from deep this season, shooting only 33.4 percent, which is fourth-worst in the league, despite having basically the same lineup. However, when the threes fall, they make a big difference; Efes is shooting 37.1 percent from deep in wins this season, compared to 29.6 percent in defeats.

ALBA Berlin – UNICS Kazan

  • In their first-ever Euroleague meeting, UNICS came from 18 down to beat ALBA 85-71.

ALBA’s reputation as a giant-killer has suffered as a result of several injuries and sicknesses, with the team winning only once in the past eight games. However, these teams are still equal in offensive PIR, and when it comes to rapid passing and back-door cutting work, ALBA appears to be the type of club that can exploit UNICS’s tough defence. First and foremost, the hosts must reduce their 16th-ranked turnover rate of 13.6 per game, which is raw meat in the eyes of a UNICS defence that steals (9.1) and causes (15.0) more turnovers than any other club.

UNICS defeated ALBA at home earlier this season, 85-71, thanks to 21 points from Lorenzo Brown and 22 points from Mario Hezonja. Meanwhile, John Brown had four thefts among the 19 turnovers UNICS forced against ALBA, which lost despite a large rebounding edge. ALBA will always play a fast-paced game with frequent ball movement to keep the tempo exciting. UNICS must be careful not to get caught up in the excitement, and must remember that its recent surge was founded on its toughness and ability to shut down rival shooters.

Real Madrid – Olympiacos

  • Real holds an 18-15 edge in their meetings since the turn of the century.

Real Madrid is coming from a double of wins last week as a result of a makeup game, with their trip to Monaco on Friday going into double overtime. As a result, the league leaders’ greatest foe may be weariness, but their deep bench and experience should alleviate those concerns. Real’s inside game, which includes rebounding ace Vincent Poirier, is in full form now and should be its best weapon, with big man Walter Tavares returning full-time and forward Guerschon Yabusele just winning the MVP for January title. They contribute significantly to this team’s EuroLeague-leading total rebounds (38.0), blocks (3.4), and PIR (94.7).

Olympiacos, which is on a three-game losing run, will seek to return to its origins this season, which featured a 74-68 home victory over Real Madrid thanks to superb defence. The Reds must play as if they haven’t lost their home streak and recognise that they are neck-and-neck with the league leaders in shooting percentages and offensive PIR. On defence, they must be cautious not to allow Real additional possessions through offensive rebounds. And they’ll have to be careful with their shots against Tavares and Poirier on the inside. Olympiacos likes to attack the basket, but Real Madrid’s defence, which holds opponents to less than 48 percent on two-point attempts, is out of this world.
