Our EuroLeague basketball tips appear under each mini game preview.
Cvena Zvezda – Virtus Bologna
Friday night’s early tipoff at Aleksandar Nikolic Hall features a matchup between Crvena Zvezda (4-6) and Virtus Bologna (4-6), both of which are in same wins but different states of form.
Zvezda has won its previous three EuroLeague games after hiring Dusko Ivanovic as their head coach, defeating ASVEL Villeurbanne, ALBA Berlin, and Maccabi. Both point guard Vildoza and fellow guard Nedovic, who previously played for Coach Ivanovic at Baskonia, have begun to have a bigger influence. Curiously, only two players reached double digits in points in the victory over Maccabi: Nedovic had 12 and Martin had 11. Zvezda will probably have to work hard for every point it scores when facing a strong defence like Virtus, which has the fourth-best ranking in the EuroLeague on this end of the floor.
Tip: 2 at 2.15
Fenerbahce – Real Madrid
Both teams are in good shape going into their matchup at Ulker Sports and Event Hall: Fenerbahce (9-1) has just lost one game all season while Real Madrid (7-3) has won five consecutive.
Fenerbahce made a number of roster adjustments during the offseason, including the hiring of Dimitris Itoudis as the new head coach, and ever since, the team has been on fire. In addition to having the greatest record in the EuroLeague this season, Fenerbahce also has the second-highest ratings on attack and defence. Injury has kept Pierre out of the previous two games for Fenerbahce, but Hayes-Davis has filled in admirably. In two contests, Hayes-Davis actually led the club in scoring with 21 points against Monaco and 22 points at EA7 Milan. Due to an injury, Wilbekin will miss the Real Madrid game, but Los Blancos have already seen how much trouble they can cause when Hayes-Davis, Calathes, Motley, and Guduric are on the field.
Tip: 2 (+1.5) at 1.95
Zalgiris – Panathinaikos
At Zalgirio Arena, Zalgiris (6-4) will play host to Panathinaikos (4-6), who has a 4-6 record and is coming off back-to-back victories in the EuroLeague double-round week.
Zalgiris is now 4-0 this season overall at Zalgirio Arena and has won four of its previous five games. Zalgiris are a very dangerous possibility in this year’s EuroLeague thanks to the never-say-die spirit that first-year head coach Maksvytis has fostered in his players. Evans, Smits, and club captain Ulanovas, who have all contributed significantly over the past few games, will be motivated to keep Zalgiris’s home winning streak intact when Panathinaikos visits.
Tip: Under 160.5 at 1.90
Bayern Munich – Maccabi
When it hosts Maccabi, Bayern Munich will try to get back on track. Before losing by one point in Monaco last week, Bayern (3-7) had won three of its previous four games. After losing in a thrilling match to Crvena Zvezda on Thursday in Belgrade, Maccabi (5-5) is still looking for its first road victory of the year. Additionally, Maccabi’s most recent victory in Munich was in March 2019.
Two former Bayern stars will travel back to Munich for the game. In 2021, Baldwin helped Bayern to within one shot of the Final Four, and Hilliard led Bayern in scoring last season with 13.7 points per game. Together, they and Lorenzo Brown form a lethal Maccabi backcourt. Baldwin (15.6 ppg, 4.5 apg) ranks second on the squad in both categories, while Brown (16.3 ppg) leads Maccabi in both. Brown is also tied for third in the league in assists (6.4 apg).
