Euroleague Basketball Predictions
Week 3 of the Euroleague regular season is here, and is already an exciting one. There are a few new teams, some old favourites and -most importantly- many great games ahead. So, let’s dive straight into our Euroleague picks for the first week:
Our EuroLeague basketball tips appear under each mini game preview.
Alba Berlin – Panathinaikos
Panathinaikos (1-1) has given its supporters plenty of cause for confidence after its first two games, while ALBA Berlin (2-0) has defied the odds thus far in the new EuroLeague season by being one of five teams without a loss. They will face off at Mercedes-Benz Arena on Wednesday night.
ALBA has demonstrated that consistency can pay off, even though very few people would have predicted the German team to start the season off so well. A key factor in ALBA’s impressive victories over Partizan and Milan was the return of 13 of the team’s 15 first-team players from the previous season, under the direction of Spanish coach Israel Gonzalez. With seven players, yes, seven, entering Round 3 with averages of 10.0 points or higher, ALBA is feeling confident going into Panathinaikos’ visit.
Tip: 2 at 2.50
Baskonia – Crvena Zvezda
On Wednesday night, Baskonia (2-0) will host Crvena Zvezda (0-2) in an attempt to start the season with three straight victories for the first time since 2010–11. A 7-7 tie in their head-to-head record will also be broken by the game’s victor.
Baskonia has had a terrific start to the year, scoring 92.0 points per game on average, which leads the league. Baskonia’s Round 2 overtime victory over Partizan at home was undoubtedly encouraging for the team’s supporters, who will undoubtedly be motivated to support their team when they face another Serbian team. The team’s offensive weight is carried by Howard and Giedraitis, with newcomers Kotsar and Costello filling in for injured center Enoch’s absence on the interior.
Tip: Over 154.5 at 1.90
Real Madrid – Olympiacos
Real Madrid (1-1) and Olympiacos (2-0) will square off once more on Tuesday in the Spanish capital. The 1995, 2013 and 2015 EuroLeague Championship Games, as well as the opening match of the current EuroLeague era on October 16, 2000, all featured these two teams as opponents.
Up until this point, Olympiacos has been on fire, winning by double digits over Barcelona and Zalgiris Kaunas. Against Zalgiris, Vezenkov was named Round 2 MVP, but Olympiacos hasn’t been a one-man show. Leading the Reds’ backcourt have been Sloukas, Larentzakis and Walkup, while French center Moustapha Fall scored 16 points against Zalgiris.
Tip: Over 154.5 at 1.90
