Efes – Real Madrid
EuroLeague MVP Micic and “partner in-crime” Larkin, have been instrumental in Efes’ success this season. Efes is practically unstoppable when the threes are dropping. In 15 victories this season, the squad has made 11.9 three-pointers and shot 41.2 percent. In its 14 losses, that total drops to 8 threes on 31.5 percent shooting. Real’s top defence is led by Tavares, but Efes has a clear road to victory if the threes are dropping.
Real has lost each of its last three road games, averaging 53.3 points per game. In those contests, however, its defence held up well, allowing an average of 66.3 points per game. Real has scored at least 80 points five times on the road this season, winning each of them. Crashing the offensive glass is one strategy to enhance production against Efes. Real has the second-most offensive boards in the league (11.7 per game), while Efes has the fourth-most (11.3 per game). It would dramatically transform the game if Tavares, Poirer, and the rest of the team could capitalise on second-chance points.
Tip: 1 (-5.5) at 1.90 with bet365
Panathinaikos – Bayern
Between Macon, Nedovic, and even big man Okaro White, the Greens have a number of elite shooters on their roster. Panathinaikos’ ability to shoot from deep has a significant impact on its performance. In wins this season, the team has averaged 9 three-pointers made at 36.8%, compared to 7.1 threes at 3.13 percent in defeats. If the hosts hit their threes, it opens up more space inside for star centre Papagiannis and enhances the team’s chances of winning.
The play of Papagiannis is essential to Panathinaikos’ defence. Otherwise, the Greens don’t put much pressure on opposing guards; they have the second-fewest steals (5.2 per game) and the fewest turnovers in the league (11.3 per game). As a result, Walden, Weiler-Babb, and Sisko should be given more leeway in terms of creating nice shots for themselves and others. Bayern ranks last in the league in two-point accuracy (50.8 percent), and if it can fix that in Athens – at least while Papagiannis is on the bench – Bayern will be fine.
Tip: 1 at 1.95 with bet365
Alba Berlin – Barcelona
The ALBA’s home-court advantage helps to blur the lines between these two teams, which have similar strengths and shortcomings. ALBA is 8-6 at home, with a PIR of 92.4 and a scoring average of 79.7 points per game. Barcelona is 8-5 on the road, with an average PIR of 85.9 and an average point total of 78.7 per game. ALBA can take advantage of the crowd’s strength on the glass, and if Luke Sikma, Ben Lammers, and the rest of the team can control the rebounds, it bodes well for the team.
ALBA and Barcelona both move the ball a lot, which leads to a lot of turnovers; ALBA leads the league with 13.8 turnovers per game, while Barcelona is second with 13.6. On the road, that number jumps to 14.3 for Barcelona, and it soars to 16.0 per game in losses this season. Barcelona can’t afford turnovers against ALBA, so how Calathes, Exum, and Laprovittola handle the ball this week could be crucial.
Tip: Over 156.5 at 1.90 with bet365
Maccabi – Milano
Maccabi Tel Aviv has been at its best this season at home, where the Israel champions have won four straight games. At home court, Wilbekin leads the charge, averaging 18.3 points and 3.3 three-pointers on 41.9 percent shooting, compared to 14.0 points and 2.1 threes on 35.3 percent shooting on the road. Maccabi will put its faith in Wilbekin once more, knowing that a huge game for the league’s No. 4 scorer might be the difference between winning and losing.
Milan’s defence has been their strength this season; they have allowed the fewest points in the league (71.3 ppg.) and will attempt to use that same defensive intensity to throw Maccabi off. Winning on the glass is one way to boost its prospects in Tel Aviv. In wins this season, Milan has outrebounded opponents by 2.3 rebounds per game, while losing by 7.7 rebounds per game. This time, at the very least, matching Maccabi in that area is crucial.
