ALBA Berlin – Baskonia
The first game of the new calendar year will be in the German capital on Tuesday when ALBA Berlin (6-10) hosts TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz (8-8) in a rescheduled Round 5 game. The two teams are coming off dramatic games last week. ALBA suffered its third straight loss, a 71-74 decision against Zalgiris Kaunas in which Simone Fontecchio scored 14 points. Baskonia overcame a 17-point deficit to edge Valencia Basket 71-70 behind 18 points from Achille Polonara.
ALBA must find a way to be more efficient and more consistent on offense. Opportunities are definitely aplenty. No team forces turnovers at a better rate than the German champs (15.4 per game) this season and ALBA also ranks second in assists (19.8 apg.). However, ALBA is the only team in the competition shooting below 35% from three-point range (34.5%) and the team has the second-lowest two-point accuracy (51.0%). Despite facing injury problems, which include the absences of Sikma and Niels Giffey, ALBA has to find a better use of its ball-movement and of the turnovers it creates.
Luke Sikma and Niels Giffey are expected to miss several weeks with injuries.
Baskonia is second in the league in offensive rebounds (11.6 orpg.) and Coach Dusko Ivanovic’s team must continue attacking the offensive glass. ALBA has allowed the third-most points this season (83.0 ppg) and has had a hard time slowing down opponents, allowing a league-high 57.2% on two-point shots and the third-most (39.6%) from long range. Getting those extra opportunities could be the key for Baskonia – and too much for ALBA’s defense.
