Zenit – Khmki
Zenit St Petersburg will look to continue its strong start to the season when it hosts Khimki Moscow Region on Tuesday evening in a battle of Russian sides. Zenit comes off a 53-66 road win at LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne in which its defense was a tough as ever. Khimki’s Round 8 game was postponed and Coach Rimas Kurtinaitis’s men will be eager to capture a valuable road win.
It all starts with defense for Zenit, which is keeping teams to a league-low 66.8 points per game. Part of that has been controlling the tempo, since Zenit’s 69.8 points per game are also a league-low. Kevin Pangos runs the Zenit offense, but his 4.3 turnovers per game must be cut down for the team to become more efficient, which is a necessity in low-scoring games. Strong play at the point guard spot is a key for Zenit.
With one of the game’s elite scorers in Alexey Shved (19.0 ppg, 10.7 apg.) and a quick and athletic roster, Khimki likes to run when possible. However, the team has made only 50.6% of its two-pointers and 33.5% of threes while committing the third most turnovers per game (15.7) and allowing opponents a league-high 9.1 steals. The recipe for success on the road against an elite defense is more efficiency – fewer turnovers that lead to easy baskets and taking better shots.
Stefan Jovic has not played yet this season due to an ankle injury. Sergey Monia has missed the last four games.

Efes – Bayern
In a showdown between two of the hottest teams in the league, Anadolu Efes Istanbul hosts FC Bayern Munich on Tuesday. Efes has reeled off three straight wins – including two on the road – and now looks to capture its second home win of the season. Second-place Bayern is 3-1 on the road this season and has won its last two games. A victory over the team that had the best record last season would be another confidence boost for Coach Trinchieri’s side.
Efes has found success through its guards in recent years, whether that be Shane Larkin, Vasilije Micic, Rodrigue Beaubois or Krunoslav Simon. This season, the team’s traditional elite three-point shooting has dipped to 37.2%, while it has allowed opponents to make 41.9% of threes. Efes will need to play better all-around defence against a Bayern team, which has no shortage of one-on-one scorers, headlined by Wade Baldwin IV.
Shane Larkin and Bryant Dunson both missed the team’s games in Rounds 7 and 8.
If Efes arrives without the injured Bryant Dunston, Bayern can make the most of what is already a significant rebounding advantage. With Jalen Reynolds (6.9 rpg.) leading the way, Bayern has outrebounded opponents by an average of 6.4 per game, while Efes has been outrebounded by 4.7 per game. If Bayern can maximize that difference, especially on the offensive glass where its 11.5 per game are second-most in the league, the visitors will put themselves in a good spot to score another road win.

Zalgiris – CSKA Moscow
Two teams with identical records meet on Tuesday in a classic of European basketball when Zalgiris Kaunas (5-3) hosts CSKA Moscow (5-3) in the first of both teams’ two games this week. Zalgiris started strong, but has lost three of its last four games, including a blowout in Tel Aviv last week. CSKA, on the other hand, is on a three-game winning streak after a slow start.
Zalgiris seems to have entered a dark moment of the season after shining in the first rounds. The Lithuanian champion will look to get back to the winning path as soon as possible. However, CSKA boats the second-best offense in the league. Last week, CSKA missed several key players including Mike James, so it remains to be seen if he will be available for the game. The hosts average less than 30 rebounds per game, so that could be a starting point to try to gain control of the rhythm in games.
Zalgiris swingman Patricio Garino will be out of action until December after a knee operation.
CSKA is on a roll and getting better day by day after a slow start. The reigning champs are facing a team that is having doubts now, so they should try to take advantage of the situation. The visitors have some of the poorest shooting percentages in the league from the stripe and from inside the arc, so if they work on improving that aspect and with better shot selection, they will have a much bigger chance of leaving Kaunas with the win.

Baskonia – Fenerbahce
Two teams in need of wins will face each other on Tuesday when TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz hosts Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul in their first game of a double-bill week. Baskonia did not complete a comeback against CSKA Moscow last week and lost on the road while Fenerbahce got thrashed in Barcelona, so both teams will be looking to get back on the winning track.
Baskonia is playing against the third-poorest offense in the league, but Fenerbahce (73.3 ppg.) will be eager to show that what happened in Barcelona last week was an accident. Both teams are close on paper, but with Nando De Colo sidelined, the hosts have a better opportunity to snap their losing streak to Fenerbahce.
Fenerbahce returns to Spain for the second time in less than a week, with the urge to win after the severe beating suffered in Barcelona. Baskonia showed its legendary character against CSKA, but could not complete the comeback, so it will be eager to do the job against Fener. All signs point to this game being a matter of details to see who can get this bounceback win.
De Colo will be sidelined until early December with a calf muscle injury.

Valencia – Panathinaikos
Valencia Basket comes off a loss against FC Bayern Munich and hopes to bounce back right away at La Fonteta. Bojan Dubljevic (12.7 ppg.) has been Valencia’s top scorer until now, followed by Nikola Kalinic (11.1 ppg.) and Klemen Prepelic (10.1 ppg.). Panathinaikos OPAP Athens is on a two-game losing streak and looks for its second road victory. Nemanja Nedovic (15.6 ppg.), Ioannis Papapetrou (12.6 ppg.) and Georgios Papagiannis (8.0 ppg., 5.3 rpg., 1.5 bpg.) have been its pillars so far this season.
Valencia needs to get its big men involved, as Dubljevic and Mike Tobey are great pick-and-pop players who can take Papagiannis out of the paint with their shots from downtown. Stopping Nedovic is a priority but Valencia can rely on its top on-the-ball defender Guillem Vives to do so. Fernando San Emeterio is back, which gives Valencia more weapons to use against Howard Sant-Roos and Papapetrou at small forward. Getting Kalinic and Derrick Williams involved on offense is also a priority for the hosts.
Vanja Marinkovic has missed Valencia’s last two games due to a shoulder injury. Joan Sastre is sidelined with a partial tear to the internal lateral ligament of his right knee.
Panathinaikos has been taking good care of the ball, averaging 1.47 assists per turnover, but has struggled to shoot well from beyond the arc (34.4%, 12th overall) and especially from the foul line (72.0%, 17th). Shelvin Mack gives Panathinaikos more firepower from downtown. Panathinaikos leads the EuroLeague in offensive (1.5 orpg.) and total rebounds (37.2 rpg.), and those second-chance opportunities are critical to stopping Valencia’s transition game.
