I have mentioned before my belief that Portugal will be the winnner of Euro 2016. But now it is time for actions. Fernando Santos’ side is taking on Iceland on their first group match. Portugal have qualified comfortably topping their group in the Euro 2016 qualifiers. Santos’ approach to the way the national team should function has brought better result than his Paulo Bento, who he replaced. Fernando Santos warned that Iceland “are more than just physically strong” as he prepared a Cristiano Ronaldo-powered Portugal for their opening Group F game.

CR7 will pass Luis Figo in international caps. He also hopes he will score in a 4th successive Euro.

There are no injury concerns for the Portuguese side.

Possible line-up
Portugal: Rui Patrício; Vieirinha, Bruno Alves (Carvalho), Pepe, R.Guerreiro; João Mário, Danilo, Moutinho, Adrien Silva; Nani, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Doubtful: Quaresma (hamstring)

Iceland

Iceland is making its major tournament debut. They managed to finish 2nd in the group stage, 2 points behind Czech Republic. But leaving Turkey 3rd and Holland out of the final stage of the Euro cannot be purely luck or coincidence. Iceland is the smallest nation to grace a major finals (population of 330,000) and has come to France with the ambition of succeeding more.

Iceland plays attacking football which sometimes pays for by conceding more goals. But yes, they are physically strong and they can also score goals especially from set pieces.

Possible line-up
Iceland: Halldorsson; Sævarsson, R Sigurdsson, Árnason, Skúlason; Gudmundsson, G Sigurdsson, Gunnarsson, Bjarnason; Sigthórsson, Finnbogason.
