Crvena Zvezda – Maccabi

With a strong run of form at home, Zvezda has given itself a chance to break into the crucial top eight, defeating Fenerbahce, Baskonia, and Real Madrid in the last ten days. All of those games were closely contested, with all of them decided by 5 points or less, so Zvezda will feel confident going up against a Maccabi team that has only won once on the road in the last four months.

Maccabi’s poor road record – one win in ten EuroLeague games – has been marked by subpar offensive production, with only two of those games exceeding 80 points. This has frequently been due to an overreliance on Wilbekin, Maccabi’s only guard who has averaged more than 10 points per game this season, for backcourt creation. Against a strong Zvezda defence, finding a more varied attack will be crucial.

Alba Berlin – Olympiacos

ALBA has won three straight games, largely due to its dominance of the boards. It has racked up a total of 28 rebounds against its last three opponents. ALBA is fourth in the league with 10.8 offensive rebounds per game this season, thanks to players like Sikma, Lammers, Thiemann, and Koumadje. If ALBA can convert a large number of missed shots into second-chance baskets, it will significantly aid the team’s cause.

The German champions are one of only two teams in Piraeus this season to score 80 points, the other being reigning champion Efes. Olympiacos is one of the league’s best defensive teams, forcing a lot of missed shots, but they’ve given up 10.2 offensive rebounds to their opponents. Now, in Berlin, they must control the tempo and fasten the wrenches on defence to gain control of the game against ALBA, whose unrestricted passing game is Olympiacos’ kryptonite.

Villeurbanne – Baskonia

ASVEL suffers in sharing the ball, with only 13.7 assists per game, the lowest in the competition. Not surprisingly, the French team has one of the worst three-point shooting records in the Euroleague, hitting only 33.6 percent of their three-point attempts. Long-range shooting star Howard, who has made 47.6% of his threes this season, will need help from veteran playmakers Lacombe and Diot to set the tempo and run the attack.

It’s definitely too late for a genuine playoff push, but Baskonia’s fortunes appear to be changing for the better. On Tuesday, the Spanish squad beat defending champion Anadolu Efes in the EuroLeague for the first time in 2022, after winning at Real Madrid two days earlier. Inside domination was vital against Efes, with 59.5 percent two-point shooting and 40 rebounds, and another tough performance is expected against Astroballe.

Real Madrid – Milano

Real Madrid is mired in a troubling rut, having dropped four games in a row as a result of an offensive meltdown in which the squad has failed to score more than 68 points in any of those contests. Real’s troubles were highlighted in Tuesday’s loss to Zvezda, with the team scoring 22 field goals on 65 tries (33.8 percent) and only two players scoring more than 8 points. It’s easier said than done, but Pablo Laso’s guys must maintain their confidence in order to break out of their funk.

Milan has been the greatest defensive club in the competition recently, not allowing more than 78 points in any game since early December, and the hosts could not have picked a harder opponent to rekindle their attack. It’s critical to get out to a fast start on defence to keep Real from gaining confidence, which will then allow Rodriguez to take command of the game on a court he knows better than virtually anybody in Europe.
